What:
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the competition has since occurred biennially in 2005, 2007, and 2009. The next event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in fall 2011. Open to the public free of charge, visitors can tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how energy-saving features can help them save money today.
About the presenter:
Thomas Meyers is an active building code official and code consultant with over 15 years of regulatory experience. He currently serves as the Building Official for Central City, Colorado and for the US Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon. The Solar Decathlon has been called "the most technologically advanced, net-zero jurisdiction in the world".
Mr. Meyers has been active in ICC code development since its inception. He currently serves as the Chairman of the International Residential Code (IRC) Building and Energy Committee. Meyers has previously served on ICBO and ICC Evaluation Services committee, developing an expertise in evaluating alternate methods and materials. He also has worked extensively with disabled accessibility issues on a local and national level. Mr. Meyers has conducted training seminars for the past 10 years and believes that building code training can be both informative and stimulating through the use of high energy presentations containing abundant and relevant visual imagery.
