We're Moving!

By Deb Kleinman, USGBC CO Executive Director

Two and a half years ago, the Colorado Chapter moved into the Alliance KitchenCenter in Denver – a multi-tenant non-profit center operated by the Sustainable Alliance for Colorado.  It has been a wonderful home for us as we have increased staff 500% (from one to five), expanded our geographic reach and launched new programs and initiatives.

Due to this rapid growth, USGBC Colorado will be moving July 1st to 1821 Blake Street, a 2-storey, 2,216 square Spiral Stair Casefoot office overlooking the southern edge of Coors Field.  The building is a historic firehouse where archival photographs documenting firefighters from the late 1800’s will greet visitors in the lobby.  An antique horse-drawn ‘fire truck’ will hang from the atrium at the center of the building.

The building has been registered under LEED for Commercial Interiors, GBCI waived the registration fee.  Preliminary projections by the project team indicate the Colorado Chapter achieving LEED Platinum.  This goal has played a major role in the planning for the new space – including an attempt to negotiate a green lease to hosting an applicator training of American Clay Earth Plaster to the choice of carpet underlayment for its green attributes as well as acoustical properties.  You can follow the progress of the Chapter’s LEED project on the blog:  http://usgbccooffice.blogspot.com/.

When completed, the office will have expanded space for the staff, a community resource center with a green building library, an upstairs meeting space, and a roofOffice deck with views of Coors Field.  We are excited to create a space that not only will serve as the Colorado Chapter headquarters, but also a living, breathing example of what we do and how we do it.

This project is an example of the passion and generosity of the green building community in Colorado.  Currently our out of pocket expenses for the move are less than $3,000.00 due to donations of goods and services from a number of individuals and companies:

  • Annette Stelmack, Inspirit-LLC:  Project Management
  • Dan LeBlanc, VRG Sustainability:  LEED Consulting
