Reflections On Our Chapter's Progress

Come celebrate our Five Year Anniversary and learn about our plans for the future of Colorado's Green Building Community

By Deb Kleinman, Executive Director, USGBC Colorado Chapter

Deb

It has been almost a year since I took the reins at USGBC Colorado, and what a year it has been! The Chapter's official headquarters had been my spare bedroom. The Executive Director was the only full-time paid staff position.

Today, we are headquartered in a LEED certified historic building in Downtown Denver, and our professional full-time staff has increased by 400%. Our Board of Directors has diversified in terms of gender, geography and industry sector - commercial real estate attorneys and developers now sit with architects, engineers and general contractors, all working to grow and sustain the organization.

We've launched our first major statewide campaign, the Colorado Green Schools Initiative, which has taken off locally and received accolades from USGBC National. We hosted our first major statewide conference, and will host our second one in May 2009. Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and our growing staff, we've hosted five LEED Technical Review Workshops so far this year, and have more planned for the Fall - including the state's first LEED for Homes Workshop.

Perhaps most critical has been the establishment of three of the six planned Colorado Chapter Branches around the state, and plans to move forward on three additional branches covering western Colorado in the next six to nine months. Each Branch is led by a dedicated group of volunteers who comprise the Steering Committee for each territory. Local Branches cover smaller territories within the Chapter, creating numerous locally-focused volunteer, education and advocacy opportunities for the green building community and advancing our mission of transforming Colorado's built environment.

2008 is all the more remarkable because the Chapter is only five years old! In 2003, the Colorado Chapter was recognized as the 15th Chapter in the country by the U.S. Green Building Council, and a year later incorporated as a non-profit organization. Led by interior designer and founding Board Chair Annette Stelmack, a remarkable group of leaders established the organization and in 2006 hosted thousands of green builders at the 2006 Greenbuild conference in Denver

We have a great deal to celebrate, and even more to look forward to!
